Applications

It is used in Ceramic capacitors, piezoelectric ceramics.

Dental Ceramics

Glass-ceramic compositions use in dental restorations to mimic closely the appearance of natural teeth. Cerium oxide is added in small amounts, 0.1 wt %, to fluorosilicate materials to provide required fluorescence.

Zirconia Ceramics

Zirconia, ZrO2, is an important ceramic particularly for high temperature uses. The addition of CeO2 to zirconia produces a material with exceptional toughness and good strength.

Cerium oxide-doped zirconia is also used in thermal barrier spray coatings on metal surfaces, such as aircraft engine parts, in order to reduce the high temperatures to which the metal substrate would otherwise be exposed.
